Jomon Period |
The Jomon Period in Japan refers to the same time period
as the Neolithic Age, lasting several thousand years from its beginning
7,000 to 8,000 years before Christ.Peaple living in this area during that
time were mainly hunter/gatherers who lived in excavated in the soil. |
Togariishi Remains |
There are the remains from Jomon Period of about 5,000 years
ago. Earthenware, stone tools and houses of those anceient people were discovered.
Artifacts from an excavation are exhibited in Togariishi Jomon Kokokan (Togariishi
Jomon Archaeological Museum), and the houses where the ancients once lived
are also reproduced and displayed outdoors. |
National Treasure-Jomon no Venus (Venus of
Jomon) |

Archacologists and historians belive this clay figure,
the Venus of Jomon, was made approximately 4,500 years ago. The clay
figure, that of a pregnant woman, is caeved with many marvelous patterns
highlighting the details of the fugure. The venus of Jomon is displayed
at Togariishi Jomon Kokokan (Togariishi Archaeological Museum).

Kamen no Megami (Masked Goddess) |
The clay figure of Masked Goddess was made
approximately 4,000 years ago. The kace that once wore an inverse triangular
mask and the whirls and circles carved on the body still shine even today.
